A House Divided

2008 MMSGS Tournament:
A House Divided

This three-round tournament will be played at the Daniel Boone Regional Library on May 3, June 7 and July 5, 2008. The game is the the 3rd edition of the U.S. Civil War simulation classic, published by Phalanx Games. Game play will start at 9:00am on each date; however, paired players who cannot make these dates may arrange alternate playing times prior to the start date of the next round. The tournament is being organized by Charlie Ward.

The tournament will use the Version 3.1 living rules authored by Alan Emrich and posted on the Web at http://www.alanemrich.com/Games_Archive_pages/AHD_pages/ahd3.htm rather than the version 3 rules included in the boxed game. There are very few differences between the rule sets, but the 3.1 rules are clearer, better organized and easier to use. (Players should download the rules package in .zip format and extract the Basic game rules. The other items in the .zip package can be ignored.)

The following 10-turn scenarios will be played:

Round 1:1861 -- July, 1861 thru June, 1862
Round 2:1862 -- April, 1862 thru March, 1863
Round 3:1863 -- April, 1863 thru March, 1864

The victory condition for each of the game scenarios is determined by the difference of Army Maximum Size between the two players at the end of the game. Click here to view the tournament rules and tie-break details. Games should be played to completion in order to fairly determine tie-break points for the winner.

In the first round of the tournament, sides will be determined randomly. In the second and third rounds players will be paired based on won-loss records and tie-break points. No player will be paired to play either the Union or Confederacy three times. The overall winner will be determined by won-loss record, with a tie broken if necessary by total tie-break points won during the tournament.

Here are the current standings:
