Tournament: A House Divided

Format and Rules

  • The game to be played is the U.S. Civil War simulation “A House Divided”, 3rd edition, published by Phalanx Games.
  • The rules to be used will be the version 3.1 Basic Game rules, rather than the rules packaged in the retail game.  The version 3.1 rules can be downloaded from the Web from URL http://www.alanemrich.com/Games_Archive_pages/AHD_pages/ahd3.htm.
  • The following optional rules will be in effect:  5.41 Union Naval Evacuations, and 6.1 Combat Experience.  In the 1861 Short Game Scenario (see below) optional rule 4.12 Kentucky Neutrality will also apply.  Opponents may use any other optional rules to which they mutually agree.
  • The tournament moderator will be Charlie Ward.  Game results should be reported to him either in person or at czar8196@tranquility.net, including the scenario and the Army Maximum Size difference at the end of the game.
  • The victory condition for each of the game scenarios is determined by the difference of Army Maximum Size between the two players at the end of the game.  As a tie-breaker in determining the overall tournament winner, the winner of each game will be credited with a number of tie-break points based on Army Maximum Size difference at the end of the game:

A.    The first-round game will follow the 1861 Short Game Scenario (Rules section 11.1).  In this scenario an Army Maximum Size difference of 5 or more is defined as a Union victory and a value of 4 or less as a Confederate victory.  In this scenario if the game ends with an Army Maximum Size difference of 5, the Union player will receive one tie-break point; for an Army Maximum Size difference of 4 the Confederate player will receive one tie-break point.  Values further from the mean of 4.5 will result in a larger number of tie-break points being awarded.

B.    Second- and third-round games will follow the 1862 and 1863 scenarios defined in rules sections 11.2 and following sections.  In these scenarios the winner of each game will be credited with the number of points by which the Army Maximum Size difference deviates from the level defined in the scenarios as a draw.  Example: At the end of a game using the 1862 scenario and ending on the 03/1863 turn the Army Maximum Size difference between the two players is 10, a Confederate marginal victory.  Rules section 11.3 defines a value of 12 as a draw in this scenario; therefore the Confederate player would be awarded 2 tie-break points.
